The compound events community gathered once again at the European Geosciences Union General Assembly 2023 (EGU23) held in Vienna, Austria and online, from 23–28 April 2023. Throughout the week, EGU23 served as a gateway for new collaborations and fostering knowledge exchange. In this post we will highlight two key events that unfolded on the last two days of conference: the compound-event/multi-risk social dinner and the ITS1.4/NH0.6 session on Compound weather and climate events.

An evening of community-building spirit:
As the conference neared its end, the compound events community came together for a nice social dinner on Thursday evening at the Schweizerhaus in Vienna. Co-organized by Marleen de Ruiter and Emanuele Bevacqua, the social dinner joined around 130 members of the compound-event and multi-risk networks. In the spirit of community-building and knowledge exchange, this evening was an opportunity to reconnect with familiar faces and to establish new connections for future collaborations. The social dinner was a nice prelude to the following day’s session.

A morning of exciting oral sessions:
The oral session started early Friday morning, chaired by Jakob Zscheischler, Emanuele Bevacqua, and Philip Ward. With a diverse range of presentations, from multivariate events to other types of compound events, 17 captivating talks sparked very interesting questions and ideas. The closure of the session was marked by the announcement of DAMOCLES’ conclusion and the call for new conveners of the session and ideas to shape the future of compound events research. Don’t hesitate to get in touch in case of interest!

More information about the abstracts is available at the EGU website https://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU23/session/46939
Note that supplementary materials and commenting is still available until 31 May.

Closing EGU with poster session:
The poster sessions returned to its traditional format in EGU23. A myriad of research topics related to compound events was present and the in-person interactions facilitated meaningful discussions. It was the culmination of a week of intense exchange, setting the tone for the path forward in compound event research.

From the social dinner to the engaging session, we walked away inspired and motivated as we say farewell to EGU23. Our gratitude to the organizers, presenters, and attendees who contributed to the success of these events! Let us stay connected until we meet again soon!
